i need to create a second partition on my current drive where im running xp pro. i want to install vista but i also want to keep xp intact. but i dont know where to start. i have no idea how to do it without reformatting the drive.

You can Google or MSN search it, there are several. I haven't tried any since I have PartitionMagic though.

There is, but I'd strongly recommend not trusting a hypercritical task like shrinking my operating system's partition to freeware.
if u have one hard drive u can not make another partition from the boot xp cd...trust me i tired i aslo just lost my dvd burner so... only way for me unless u do a vitural drive which i have never ever tried but i got one here for u man and its free
u can try partitioning magic 7.0 go here and click the download link next to the name and don't click 8.0 its retail demo only...exact and run, restart and look at folder read read me for serial key..copy it and run exe and u should be good from there
